PHD Thesis Structure Thesis structure for a PhD thesis should be a document structure which is acceptable by the University from where you are pursuing your doctoral degree program. It is a good practice to refer to this structure from the University and get it vetted by your supervisor.
In all departments, if some part of the thesis is not solely your work or has been carried out in collaboration with one or more persons, you should also submit a clear statement of the extent of your contribution. Guidelines for thesis writing The main purpose of your thesis is to describe your work in a way that will allow the reader to judge its quality and significance. Most of the thesis should be devoted to the matters to which you have made a contribution.
Obtaining copies of or from an Oxford thesis. Copying of Oxford theses, even of a single page, may require the author's written permission which must be submitted to reading room staff before such an order can be accepted. Digital copies of theses and copies made for library or institutional use always require the author's written permission.

The Faculty offers two research degrees. For the DPhil, candidates produce a thesis of up to 100,000 words. A shorter research degree, the MLitt, resulting in a thesis of up to 50,000 words is another option.
Writing your research proposal The purpose of the research proposal is to demonstrate that the research you wish to undertake is significant, necessary and feasible, that you will be able to make an original contribution to the field, and that the project can be completed within the normal time period.
Formatting Your Thesis and Word Limits The University has rules for the presentation and binding of research degree theses and your thesis may not be examined if you fail to follow these. Take some time to familiarise yourself with these rules before you get too far into your writing.
