Corporate governance is the system by which companies are directed and controlled. The corporate governance of banks differs from the corporate governance of ordinary companies. This is due to the nature of the banking business, the complexity of its organisation, the uniqueness of banks’ balance.

The thesis traces developments in executive compensation at a sample of American (US) and European banks from 1999 to 2013. Three investigative chapters examine developments in compensation arrangements in the boom period before the global financial crisis, during and following the crisis, and for cohorts of global-systemically-important-banks, EU banks, and US banks.

The last ten years have seen the emergence of a new field within the corporate governance literature dedicated to the corporate governance of banks, which has especially focused on US banks.
